Now that’s a horse of a different color

13Oct

I love going to into hardware stores and just stare at the all of the colors neatly tucked next to each other in the paint section. The cream on the cake is reading the scrumptious, clever names like “Alaskan skies” and “blanched almond”. (Who gets to name those colors by the way? I want that job!)

I always want to try and DO something with colors samples! But what?

Rachel Berger wrote an article for the Design Observer about each day taking a random paint sample and responding to the color/name with a short writing on the back. She listed 100 of her favorites. Here’s one of my favorites of her favorites:

In my second grade class picture, I am the only girl in pants. But it’s not like I dressed down. My pants are pale orange and white checked, a daring compliment to my shirt, which is a rayon button-down with pictures of the planets on it. I stand out from the crowd: tall and skinny, a sandy bowl cut, orange pants.

I’m always a little amazed and giddy that these hardware stores allow you take paint sample strips. I’m thinking, “Are you really giving away beautifully colored pieces of paper in a 80lb card stock in every shade possible??!”

Here’s an idea on what you can do with all of those shades of colors — make pixelated wall art!

This guy’s apartment looks a bit like Home Depot. Or he really couldn’t decide which color to use on his walls!

Does anyone have good ideas on turning paint samples into something else?

Surf confession

09Oct

Fact: I love surfboards.

Confession: I’ve never really been on one.

Conclusion: Get. me. on. one!

Rick Malwitz is not only a brilliant designer, he also designs and creates some of the most beautiful surfboards I’ve seen.

All of the colors and finishes he uses are so calming and “match” the ocean. Don’t you just love this eggplant color one?

If I owned one of these, I don’t know if I’d be able to use it! I’d just want to display it as a beautiful art piece!

I really cannot wait to get a lesson and try this sport out. Unfortunately winter is approaching and I’m a big wuss and wear sweaters in 70 degree weather. So… I either gotta get tough (!) or wait until spring. ( I know, I know what the surfers say — the surf on the east coast is during the winter… guess I gotta get tough..)

Have a surfy weekend!

sushi yum

08Oct

I had some sushi last night and I was reminded of the hilarious, silly and awesome sushi items I found with my dear friend Mimi last year. I know you can find anything sushi under the sun but my favorite that I’ve seen are…

Sushi Pillows!

sushiWho wouldn’t want to cuddle up next a giant piece of raw fish?

600_Tall_Salmon_RollPrefer the rolls? No problem!

And, it wouldn’t be sushi without its friends like, mr. edamame:

return from hiatus

05Oct

Hello readers! I apologize for the looong break between updates. I have been away from a computer for all this time. But I’m back and will be updating daily again! Hurray!

I did manage to watch a couple of episodes of Ken Burns’ National Parks documentary though… and love love love it.  I’m catching up with the full episodes online!

As you can tell, I love camping and nature so I am excited to watch the rest. The interviewers say exactly how one feels (or at least how I feel) about these parks and our natural environment in the U.S. I think one said that visiting these parks, being in nature, was like “coming home”. I loved that.

Yosemite has a special place in my heart because I’d visited there so many times as a kid.

yosemite_national_park_half_dome_travel_poster-p228145446194109209tdcp_400I tried to find some graphic design inspired by our nation’s parks but found very few. Anyone know of any?

I did find these BEAUTIFUL posters of the Bay Area. Wouldn’t they look so snappy as a set? They are (and many more) available for purchase at the Parks Co. — and printed on recycled paper! yay!
